Packing Tips

Oh! What Stuff! Packing up for your move is the one time you regret having some of the coolest, most unique collection pieces, electronic equipment, and delicate items. In amongst all of your general “stuff” you need to pack up everything, including the kids, in a timely and reasonably concise manner. Below are a few tips to help you get moved out effectively and efficiently while limiting the drama of moving.

Moving with kids is an adventure that will either make you laugh out loud or cry right along with them. When you are moving with kids, the drama of moving is increased ten fold since most of the time they don’t really understand the process. Some kids believe that when you place their things in the box that you are going to throw it away, even if you’ve never tossed anything of theirs before. Their hysterical tears will catch you off guard and make you tense, if you let it. When you are moving with kids for the first time, explain everything as thoroughly as possible in order to prevent additional drama from coming into the scene and creating tension that you just don’t need.

When it comes to packing electronics, you have to take the weather conditions as well as the length of time your belongings will be in transit. Air tight material and plastics can create condensation, which will ultimately threaten to destroy fragile elements. If at all possible, packing electronics in open ended containers or boxes and limiting their time in any type of packaging is necessary. While this might not always be possible, you may need to purchase additional packing supplies made just for the purpose of packing electronics. Many people opt not to because of the additional cost. However, the price of additional packing electronics supplies is still far less than replacing an entire laptop or desktop.

Packing supplies are there to make your life easier. Do you absolutely need every single packing supply that is sold in stores? Probably not. But packing supplies are specifically designed to help prevent damage or to help keep you organized during this time of chaos. When choosing your packing supplies, always think “one up.” Going one up in size or one up in amount helps prevent numerous trips to the packing supplies store. If you end up with extra packing supplies, chances are good you can recoup some of your investment simply by selling them to the next person you know that decides to move.

While packing supplies, moving with kids, and packing electronics are just three of the areas that most moving families never see eye to eye on, but these few small tips should help prevent dissention in the ranks.
